FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is an AED?
The automated external
defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device that checks a
person’s heart rhythm, recognizes a rhythm that requires a shock, and
can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. The AED uses voice
prompts, lights, and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to
take.What is Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart no longer pumps blood
to the brain or body. This is a sudden and unexpected event that can
possibly be reversed if an electrical shock can be rapidly delivered
to the heart.
What is a Defibrillation “Shock"?
Defibrillation (a.k.a. "shock") is the delivery of direct electrical
current to the heart in an attempt to convert the heart’s natural
electrical activity from a quivering and non-pumping condition to a
steady blood pumping condition.
What is the cost of an AED?
The price of an AED varies by make and model. Most AEDs will cost
between $1,500–$2,500.
What types of recurring costs will I have?
The local AED representatives can provide detailed information on the
maintenance recommendations. Generally speaking, yearly preventative
inspections, replacement electrodes, and replacement batteries are the
most frequent maintenance costs. All these items should be discussed
when considering a maintenance agreement.
How many people should be trained in CPR/AED use for the size of my
organization?
You should begin by identifying those employees that desire to be
active in the PAD program and wish to participate in an emergency
response team. Be certain that enough employees are trained to respond
to emergencies at any hour your business operates.
Is training only required once or do employees have to attend some
sort of annual class?
Frequency of retraining is dependant on the AED/CPR course that was
taken. Generally, recertification occurs every 2 years.
Is there a cost associated with City registration?
Registration is free.
Do I have to register with the state as well?
There is no current method by which the State monitors this statute.
If registration is required by state law, how does the state monitor
that?
The State requires registration but monitoring is delegated to the
local EMS agency. There is no State monitoring system in place.
Will I have to hire someone for the medical oversight which was
previously mentioned?
Medical oversight can be obtained from an AED vendor if a physician is
not readily available to the purchaser.
