Music Under The Stars Begins on October 10

Behind the scenes, preparations are being made for the latest in sound and lights.
Final touches are being put on the stage. Landscaping is being completed and plans are being finalized for parking and concessions as the first of 16 music concerts under the stars opens in downtown Arlington on October 10. "This is such a big thing for our city," said Patti Diou, executive director of the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts. "Everything is first class." Expect a flurry of activity during the next two weeks, she says. With only 10 days before opening night, construction crews are putting the finishing touches on the Levitt Pavilion and Founder's Plaza in preparation for the grand opening celebration that includes city and state proclamations and ribbon cutting ceremony. Headlining the inaugural concert is Brave Combo, a two-time Grammy-award winning band. Known for polka music, this eclectic Denton-based band incorporates a number of dance styles into a mix of rumba, cha-cha-cha, choro and sama. Audiences can expect polka versions of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Rolling Stones. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and coolers. The Levitt Pavilion is located in Founders Plaza at the corner of Abram and Center streets, at 100 W. Abram Street across the street from City Hall. "Go Anywhere You Want" with the New GOcard
Young Arlington readers are off and running with their GOcards. More than 3,500 pre-K through six-graders have flocked to Arlington public libraries to snatch up their new library cards or replace their old ones with a new GOcard. GOcard is so named because "libraries can take you anywhere you want to go," says Arlington Director of Libraries Cary Siegfried. "They provide access to a wealth of materials, whether it is books, magazines, computers or even homework help." And it's free. Among adults, children and teens, 4,000 new library card applications have been processed. That's four times higher than usual. The GOcard was designed by youth as part of an art competition among Arlington and Mansfield schools. A campaign sponsor is Atmos Energy. "We believe in the youth of this community and are proud to work in a partnership with the library to encourage our leaders of tomorrow," said John Paris, Atmos Mid-Tex division president. Go to arlingtonlibrary.org to check out the winning designs or to get information on how to get your GOcard. Click here to view GOcard video.
Youth Spotlight: Lamar Senior is Making A Difference

Lamar High School senior Gustavo Robles wants to make a difference in the world. He's starting in his own city of 365,000 people. As a Richard Greene Scholar, his internship included four weeks at City Hall. He met with City Manager Jim Holgersson about the budget and shadowed District 3 City Council member Robert Rivera. His first day on the internship was the day the city launched commuter bus service with The T. Robles had some difficulty getting to the kick-off event. He doesn't have a car. Fluent in Spanish, Robles worked with the City to develop promotional material to market new commuter bus service to churches, schools and shopping malls. Robles helped design and translate flyers, newspaper ads and information for the website. He wants the city's latest transit initiative to be a success. "If people don't know that bus service is available, they won't use it," he says. Arlington motorists can park their vehicles at one of the two Park and Ride lots and ride The T into downtown Fort Worth. For weekday bus schedules, visit  arlingtontx.gov/bus.

The Richard Greene Scholar program is sponsored by the Texas Rangers in partnership with the City fo Arlington and Arlington ISD.
