Collins Street Bridge to be demolished

Collins Street Bridge to be demolished
I-30 detour in Arlington

The Collins Street (FM 157) bridge over Interstate 30 will be closed Thursday, July 9 at 5 a.m. The bridge is scheduled for demolition and will remain closed until fall 2009. The demolition will accelerate the reconstruction of the new bridge. It will open to its full capacity nearly four months ahead of schedule.

"While we realize this construction will impact traffic for the near term, the opportunity to complete this portion of the project ahead of schedule will yield benefits to our citizens and visitors,” said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck, M.D.

In addition, Interstate 30 under Collins Street will be closed Friday, July 10 at 7 p.m. through Sunday, July 12 to accommodate the demolition of the bridge. Motorists will be reduced to one lane in each direction and diverted to the frontage roads then back onto I-30. Traffic may be heavy and alternate routes are encouraged. This weekend was chosen to demolish the bridge because it had the least impact to major events in the area.

Southbound motorists will be detoured at Ryan Plaza Drive west to Center Street across the Center Street Bridge. Motorists then may use either Road to Six Flags Drive or Randol Mill Road to access Collins Street to the east.

Northbound Collins Street motorists may access I-30 at the Center Street Bridge from either Randol Mill Road or Road to Six Flags Drive. Collins Street north of Road to Six Flags Drive to Skyline Drive will remain in two-way operation with full access to both Skyline Drive and the Lincoln Square Mall entrance.
